Fuel Your Workout: What to Eat Before and After Exercise

Whether you walk, lift, swim or dance, what you eat around exercise can change how you feel during the session and how quickly you bounce back afterward. You do not need special powders or complicated rules. A little planning with everyday foods is enough to give your body the fuel and building blocks it needs.

Before you move: choose easy energy

Carbohydrates are your muscles' favorite fuel. A light snack such as a banana, a slice of whole grain toast with honey or a small bowl of oats gives steady energy without weighing you down. Leave a little time between a larger meal and an intense session so your stomach feels settled.

After you move: protein plus carbs

Exercise creates tiny strains in your muscles that your body repairs as you rest. Protein supplies the building blocks for that repair, while carbohydrates refill your energy stores. Eggs on toast, yogurt with fruit, a bean and rice bowl or a smoothie made with milk and berries are all simple recovery meals.

Listen to your body

Everyone is different. Some people feel great training after breakfast, while others prefer to move on an empty stomach and eat afterward. Notice your energy, mood and digestion, and adjust your timing and portions until you find what works for you.

Food is not a reward for exercise. It is the fuel that makes every step, lift and stretch possible.

Quick fuel ideas to try

Easy snacks and meals that support active days:

  • A banana with a spoon of nut butter before a walk or class
  • Overnight oats with berries for an early workout
  • Eggs on whole grain toast after strength training
  • Greek yogurt with fruit and seeds as a recovery snack
  • A colorful grain bowl with beans, vegetables and olive oil
Our team's tip

If you have diabetes, take medicines that affect your blood sugar or train for long events, ask your doctor or dietitian for a plan that suits you before changing how you eat around exercise.
